The Ames Gate Lodge is unique compared to other Richardson designs. Though still using rock for the exterior, the surface is much more textured and the rocks are larger and not uniform. This style of rock makes the house look much more organic and blend in with the environment. All of the windows are small and the dormers are hardly visible but the underpass and the turrets stand out from the rest of the design. I like the contrast of the orange roof tiles and the starburst affect around the semicircle of the underpass. The house somewhat reminds me of the hobbit house like in photo 3.

The McFarlin Auditorium is a building on Southern Methodist University’s campus. This building is special to me because it is where my high school hosts their annual graduations including mine. My favorite part about the building is the massive steps in the front. The auditorium looks like a classic two-tier auditorium with a performing arts stage feel. The word I think of when I think of this auditorium would be grand. It is a place where important people have spoken and performed at and a place where important things happen.

The Glesner House is in Chicago, Illinois and was built to look strong but welcoming. This house, in contrast to Richardson’s other works is much more conservative. The design uses mostly squares instead of curves or circles. There is only one arch and it is flush with the rest of the structure and there are no turrets. The design is hardly ornate and the face of the house is practically two dimensional. It is said Richardson chose this design to symbolize a fortress to “protection to its inhabitants against the growing unrest” of the Gilded Age (Architecture.org).

The Allegheny County Courthouse is it Pittsburgh Pennsylvania also includes the jail, and together are two of the oldest buildings in Pittsburgh (GoogleUser). These buildings are also characteristically Richardsonia Romanesque. The are made almost completely of stone and use circular arches. However, they are less medieval looking and are decently proportioned. This building is massive and has a large tower extending high above the height of the rest of the building, which originally made the courthouse the tallest structure in Pittsburgh (GoogleUser). This building is not as dark as some of the other Hobson Richardson designs.

The bridge in the bottom photo connects the bridge and the courthouse and was modeled after of a similar Venetian structure (GoogleUser).

The Bixteco Financial Tower becomes one of the iconic building in Ho Chi Mind when it completed in 2010. Design by Carlos Zapata Studio, the building is over eight hundred feet height.

The idea of the tower design was influence by the blossoming lotus, Vietnamese national flower. But most of my friend said it looks like a corn. Anyway I think it is a very beautiful and unique design. I would like to visit it, but did not have a chance. On the 52nd floor of the tower, there is a place for visitor to see around the city.

As the major hub of South Vietnam continues to grow. There are more tower being build around it. For me, this make the tower looks less beauty in the sky of the city.

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science is located in Dallas, Texas, and is known as the modern building off of highway 75. People think of the museum’s building as an exhibit itself. The Dallas Morning News referred to it as the most modern building to ever come to Dallas.

The most interesting thing about the building is the escalator that sticks out the side of the building. It is all glass which allows visitors to see the view of Downtown Dallas. The building was also built to be eco-friendly which goes hand in hand with nature and science. The Perot even has architecture tours available.

This is the Seamarq Hotel, design by Richard Meier and his partners. The Hotel locate in South Korea, in a very beautiful location, as you can see from the picture below.

The hotel was built as an effort for the Winter Olympic 2018 in South Korea. “Our primary goal for the Seamarq Hotel has been to create a strong sense of place by enhancing and transforming the existing site in a dramatic way,” said Richard Meier.

The whole site of this construction use nature light. Its design was mean to capture all the nature light from the ocean. And being close to the ocean. Like most of Richard Meier architecture, the hotel use white as the primary color.

Jeanne Gang design the Aqua Tower, built in 2010. The skyscraper stands 82 stories tall in Chicago, Illinois. It is a residential building, providing space for apartments, condominiums, and hotel rooms. The design is unique and pleasing. It combines columns, terraces, and “pools” of windows to give it the appearance of a creek. Perhaps the most impressive feature is the large green roof. It’s no wonder this sustainable, beautiful building won the Emporis Skyscraper of the year award in 2009.

Built in 2019, Jeanne Gang’s Solar Carve Tower is a pioneer for sustainable architecture. The building’s unique shape allows it to efficiently use sunlight without increasing heat. This building not only limits the urban heat island effect, but also uses performance glass to insulate the interior. Gang’s innovative design is both attractive and eco-friendly.
