Ministry of social welfare and employment, the hague – herman Hertzberger

Another office building, the Ministry of Social Welfare at the Hague, is meant for 2,000 people and by using repeating units, avoids long and endless hallways that plague most office buildings. Also, all office spaces have an unobstructed view of the outside due to all the vertical spaces being situated to one side of the building. Yet again, form coincides with function instead of taking the backseat.

Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park

Growing up in Houston, my family and I visited this park quite often. As a kid, I remember being mesmerized by the water wall and never fully comprehending how it worked. Right next to it was a large open field where we would go to throw a ball around or have a picnic. Every time I think back on it, it brings a smile to my face. I will have to go back one of these days and see if it holds up to how I remember it.

Philbrook Museum-Tulsa

The museum now offers a wide range of courses focused on the arts. Studios were implemented in the expansions so that art could not only be observed in the building but also created. The museum has been a lasting influence on all of Tulsa by exposing people to different cultures. Since the creation of the Museum’s website, more projects have gone underway and a second center has been established for the purpose of showcasing art, in the nearby Brady District. The museum, as well as those continuing its work have done well at exposing Oklahomans and those that visit to culture and supporting artists.

Willis tower

I went to Chicago as a little kid but still took in the great city for all that it is. We went to the Willis tower and I was in awe. I didn’t know a building could be so tall. It made me feel even littler than I already was but it impressed me a lot. I experienced a sense of curiosity at that time more than anything.

Centraal Beheer Offices – herman Hertzberger

Hertzberger designed the Centraal Beheer office building, which was made as an office space for 1,000 people to occupy. It allowed multiple areas for breaks to be had or meetings to be held. Illumination, which was made to be similar to street lighting, was integral to the design. This is another example of Hertzberger illustrating that a building does not have to be function over form.

Evans Hall

This building is the prettiest building on Campus at OU and I love it. The red brick is so pretty. It means a lot to me because I am very proud to be an OU fan and I cherish the beauty of this campus. I take pride in being a sooner and so I take pride in the beautiful Evans Hall.

ok state capitol

The state capitol is a very fascinating building. It influenced me to be proud of Oklahoma when I visited as a kid. I felt so small walking up the huge steps and standing beneath the tall flags. It meant a lot to walk the big halls of a gorgeous building dedicated to Oklahoma.

LinMij Laundry – Herman hertzberger

Designed by Herman Hertzberger, the LinMij Laundry was an extension of a laundry that featured distinct units that served their own purpose while still contributing to the overall design. Hertzberger was known for challenging the idea that the form of the building was to follow it’s function, and that idea is illustrated perfectly in this building. The Laundry has since been demolished.

Devon Tower

This building means a lot to me because I have an uncle who was on the project management group overseeing the construction the building. This building influenced me from the start because it was the biggest building in the city and it represented the growth that is coming to OKC. I was blown away when I first encountered it and thought how smart the architect who designed it must be

Craftsman Farms

Gustav Stickley’s Log House was not the only building he designed for his Craftsman Farms. After all, it was intended to be a farm. His style was inspired by his build-with-nature belief, the same reason he would build horse stables, dairy barns, and cottages. Built with similar materials as the Log House (stone and wooden shingles), some included porches with red-tinted flooring or bands of windows similar to the Log House. The buildings usually had open interiors. Craftsman Farms was to become self-sustainable; however, Stickley would soon run out of money, changing plans and leading to bankruptcy. Additionally, a few of these outlying structures would succumb to fires in the 1960s. Regardless if it stands today, Gustav Stickley’s designs also provided that simple natural aesthetic, giving warmth, comfort, and tranquility to those who visited or lived there.
