I. M. Pei

I. M. Pei is a Chinese-American architect born on April 26, 1917, in Guangzhou, China. He grew up in Hong Kong and Shanghai and the elements of architecture within the cities he grew up in had a profound impact on his later works. He attended several schools, beginning at the University of Pennsylvania and later transferred to MIT to complete his Bachelor’s Degree. He went on to get a Master’s in Architecture at Harvard. He was unable to return to China as a result of WWII and began working on several projects in the US after joining the firm of Webb & Knapp post-graduation, and later went on to form his own firm, I.M. Pei & Associates (later Pei Cobb Freed & Partners). He is known for an embellished form of the “International” Style and was particularly noted for the bold use of shapes and contrasting materials within his designs. Among his most notable works are the Louvre Pyramid in Paris and the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong.

Guoco Tower – living, work, and fun

SOM also designed the Guoco Tower in Singapore. The skyscaper is 64 stories tall and is the only skyscraper exempted from Singapore’s height restriction of 280m or 918ft. This has allowed it to be the tallest building in Singapore since 2016. There are six levels of retail space and dining. The Guoco tower allows people to live, work, shop, and play all within the same building.

Walker tower

So many of my memories from my time here at OU, both good and bad, come from my time in the dorms and in Walker Tower. It is a place on campus that holds a lot of meaning for me and I’m sure many other students. At times, it was a bit of a love/hate relationship but that is to be expected sharing a tiny room and even tinier bathroom with people you don’t necessarily know all that well. I think that Walker Tower will always hold a place in my heart.

Penn Station – expanding upon history

SOM architecture, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, helped design the Pennsylvania Station in New York City New York. This train station serves over 600,000 passengers per weekday. The station is named for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Pennsylvania railroad was the largest rail road in 1882 and was the largest transportation enterprise and corporation in the world. Its budget was so large it was second only to the U.S. Government. The facility is actually the remodeled underground remnant of the original Pennsylvania station. The rebuild took approximately six years and retained most of the original rail infrastructure. The station currently has 21 tracks fed by 7 tunnels and has future plans for adding more railway platforms to accommodate 2 additional tunnels that are currently being proposed.

Minute Maid park

Growing up in Houston, I grew up a big Astros fan. Luckily for me, I am not one anymore. However, as a kid I have so many vivid memories of myself and my dad at Astros games. They are some of my fondest memories from living in Houston. The year before I moved away, 2005, they made it all the way to the World Series. My dad and I went to some playoff games and I think I still have a foul ball somewhere that I caught during one.

OU Cafeteria – a haven for food a menace for students

The Caf at OU is a building that is very boring from the outside. Once inside though is where the magic begins. From wall to wall it is filled with seating and food of all varieties. Not only is there good food but there is a dedicated stand for deserts with cheesecake of all kinds. Every time I entered this building it filled me with a sense of joy that only good food can provide and here lies the problem. While this experience made me and my brain happy these visits made my body quite sad. While the building seemed unimposing before the end of the year it added 30 pounds to my weight and made me go up a pant size. While easily obtainable good food seems nice when it comes to watching your calories and weight it can wreak havoc in no time.

Will Rogers Airport OKC

Will Rogers World Airport poised for continued growth, developments

It might just look like an average airport to most people, but this airport is actually what helped me determine my career path. Being from Oklahoma, anytime I had to fly when I traveled I would always go through Will Rodgers airport because it was only 30 minutes from my house. It is not the biggest or nicest airport in the world, but like I said it helped me choose my career path. Being inside the airport made me realize I really enjoyed aviation and thought it was something I could do for the rest of my life. Because of this airport I am studying aviation management at the University of Oklahoma. I always am reminded of positive memories when I go back to this airport

James turrell skyspace

Around Houston: Turrell in a Day | The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
This space was constructed as a pyramid like structure on Rice University in Houston, Texas. The meaning of this building is to project beautiful colors and light, with a sense of peace and relaxation. The color/light shift and change throughout the day as natural light hits the space at different angles. James Turrell is a unique artist who used light as his tool and had a magical perception towards light. I was positively influenced by this structure and art because of the creativity.

Disney world – Cinderella castle

Me & my family used to go to Disney World once a year when I was growing up. It was something to always looks forward to in the summer and I am so grateful I had this opportunity. The meaning of the building is to attract people from all around the world as if this mythical character: Cinderella, actually lives in this beautiful, amazing castle. The castle is influenced by Gothic style architecture as there are many arches and ornate panels incorporated. The castle also includes several mosaic murals that tell the story of Cinderella. I have encountered the Cinderella castle and it is magical, I don’t see how it could influence an individual any other way but positive!

Philbrook Museum-tulsa

Along with the Philbrook Villa, and another building commissioned by Waite Phillips located in New Mexico, Delk designed another building for Phillips. Delk felt that the Philtower was his greatest work that was not meant to be someone’s home. This building does not share the same Spanish influences seen in his other works. The style is described as English Gothic. I was unaware this building was designed by Delk, but I recognized the beautiful shingle roof immediately. My father, who is an electrician, had the opportunity to do light installations in the building. I imagine he is unaware of the historical value of the building, but I remember even as a child feeling pride in my dad getting to work in such a cool architectural work.
