Ningbo Art Museum

The Ningbo Contemporary Art Museum was designed with the help of Lu Wenyu and was built in 2005. I love the way she uses a lot of wood for this building. It looks beautiful and I think the stain of the wood is perfect as well. Most of the buildingl is made of wood and the museum has a huge entrance with giant doors. One of my favorite buildings of hers.

Zaha Hadid: Guangzhou Opera House

This is the Guangzhou Opera House in Guangzhou, China. This design is so intricate and beautiful. I love that all of the windows bring so much light inside. Zaha Hadid’s designs are always so intricate and exciting. This building is no exception. The shape is very abstract, and the placement of the glass is so interesting. The building is very bright on the inside from a combination of natural light and the use of white on the interior and exterior. Overall, this building is so cool and inviting.

Five Scattered Houses

These houses also designed by Lu Wenyu were completed in 2008. The project was commissioned with providing a local precinct where natural elements and people can coexist. As well as to use local and readily-available materials and technology to control cost. I think the houses look great and its nice they took nature and the surrounding elements into account.

Argentina’s 1st Sustainable Public School

This school was created by North American architect Michael Reynolds. The build took about 7 weeks and it is constructed of 60% recyclable materials (plastic and glass bottles, cardboard, cans) and 40% natural materials. I have seen these building designs before but never knew who the architect behind it was until now. Michael Reynolds’ Earthship Biotecture company is incredible and the work they do is so beautiful and is also helping save the planet. My first glance at this building made me question so much and wonder what all the little designs are for. There was so much thought that went into every piece of the building, and the hand placed recyclable materials give the building such an interesting and earthy look.

The most intriguing building I think she has ever done has to be the Kaohsiung Maritime Cultural & Pop Music Center. Like most of her building it targets a LEED Gold (Taiwan Green Building Certification). This building is absolutely incredible with how it looks, I truly have not seen anything like it. My favorite part about the design is how open and spacious everything is and how they incorporated all of the lights around the building. This place truly has everything from an outdoor market to a marine culture exhibit to a the pop music exhibit area. This Music Center is also massive in size, it is an astounding 821,300 SF. It also won Third Prize, Kaohsiung Maritime Cultural & Pop Music Center International Competition in 2011. The Kaohsiung Maritime Cultural & Pop Music Center, is the coolest building I have ever seen in my entire life.

SalesForce Tower

Salesforce Tower - Wikipedia

Cesar Pelli began his career as self-proclaimed modernist and achieved his fame through his modern glass/steel façade buildings. Though he experimented with expression of architecture outside of modernism it typically encompassed some traditional style that was imbued with the spirit of modernism. Ultimately, Pelli’s late work would be defined by softly curving facades of glass with a sculptural form in an attempt to distance himself from the boxy towers of midcentury modernism which elapsed his entire life. The clearest example of Pelli’s particular brand of modernism can be found in the Salesforce Tower located in San Francisco. This was the last buidling to be designed by Cesar Peli and also completed within his lifetime. This building is the personification of Pelli’s style which was created over a lifetime of architectural experience. Salesforce Tower is the centerpiece of the San Francisco Transbay redevelopment plan and contains a mixture of office, retail, transportation, and residential use. Upon its completion in 2018, Salesforce Tower became the tallest building in San Francisco as well as the second-largest tower West of the Mississippi River once again becoming another accolade of the late Cesar Pelli.

Hastings Pier

Designer: Sadie Morgan, dRMM Architects

I chose the Hastings Pier project mainly because of how unique it is. It’s not just another office space or apartment building. This job came about after a fire burned down the pier in 2010. The pier was an important part of life for many who lived in the area, so the community came together and found a way to rebuild, which I thought was pretty cool.

Now, the new pier can hold all kinds of community events, such as fishing, music events, circus, etc. I also liked how they supported a local employment initiative with their custom reclaimed timber deck furniture, and how they used timber decking that survived the fire as cladding for the new visitor center.

Ningbo History museum

The Ningbo Museum was also deigned by Lu Wenyu soon after her library and built in 2005. Another wild looking building but yet again I think it looks awesome. It’s definitely different but different is good sometimes. Completely different from her library this has much more sharp edges and is really just completely different all around.

Anguri Bagh Housing, Lahore, pakistan

These buildings seem very bare bones, but the intent behind them is a great one. These are homes designed by Yasmeen Lari. Yasmeen Lari is known for her work in developing buildings and homes for citizens in Pakistan and India who are poor and underprivileged. The project comprises 787 low-cost dwelling units arranged in 14 clusters of single, two-story, and three-story blocks.  The buildings provide multiple one and two bedroom homes for at a low cost for the underprivileged in Lahore, Pakistan.

Finance and Trade center, karachi pakistan

This building is the Pakistan Finance and Trade Center, for the Pakistani government. This building was developed by Yasmeen Lari and was finished in 1989. While this government building looks like a regular government building, the building has multiple levels to it with an attached parking garage. Although it may appear boring, it is very complex and interesting to look at.
